We camped in Central Station in the centre of the island as the name suggests. There was no one else around (being outside of the Australian holiday season).

Dingos were once upon a time shy scavengers, but due to tourists feeding them, they have become unafraid of humans. Quite a few tourists have been attacked, children are most at risk due to their size and curiosity. There is now an attempt to control the dingo by putting up fences and shooting some that are too tame.

Attempting to walk to the beach from central station is not advisable, it is very far and cars are unpredictable as they swerve around the roads made entirely out of sand.

Best off walking along a walking track to one of the fresh water lakes, closest one from central station is about 40 minute walk.

On the beach of the fresh water lake hundreds of march flies await, lazily lying on the beach may be what you are dreaming about, but the reality is beating off the 3 centimetre big march flies, sand flies (if you can see them), 2 centimetre ants and 2 centimetre big mosquitos that wait in any shady places, welcome to Jurassic Park.

These insects are so hungry even the 'tropical strength aero guard' which I highly recommend as an insect repellent has trouble keeping them off. The March flies will find that little spot of skin that you missed on your last insect repellent application just an hour ago.

Another time I was on Fraser island with a 4WD (Four Wheel Drive Car) which was great fun. There is a fair risk you will get stuck in the sand, hopefully in the dry sand were you can be toed out by the other helpful 4WD drivers.

If you park too close to the surf on the beach, the sand will be quickly washed from under your tyres and you are stuck. You can see by the photos, just one quarter of the wheel in the sand and you are finished without other 4WD's assistance.

Kingfisher beach resort is the eco friendly hotel on Fraser Island . I found it good, but forget the little luxuries like flushing toilets. It is children friendly too; take that as a pro or a con dependant on your life situation.
